Get an extensive perspective on the Rainforest, after hiking on our winding jungle trails, you’ve already marveled at the huge trunks of rainforest trees. But rising to the canopy gives you an entirely different appreciation of these miraculous Amazon giants. Centuries-old Brazil Nut trees, Acacias, Ceibas, and Ironwoods tower above the rest. Seeing these ancient trees is an experience you won’t soon forget. From the upper levels of the tower, your expert guide will scan for monkeys, Toucans, and other canopy-dwellers, which you’ll get to spot with a powerful scope. Flocks of screeching Parrots and Parakeets soar close to the tower. Macaws also fly overhead, occasionally perching in nearby trees. Down below, exotic birds like Jacamars and Trogons sit, as mixed flocks of glittering Tanagers and Honeycreepers flutter through the greenery.

2. Jungle Night Walk

Spy bizarre Animals & creatures. Night hikes with our experienced guides often result in amazing looks at rare insects and other animals. If you’re lucky, you’ll find Poison Dart Frogs, Praying Mantises, giant spiders, and other animals with incredible, strange adaptations to life in the darkness. You might even spot a sleeping bird or bright Morpho Butterfly.

A wildlife lover’s dream. These lakes teem with wildlife, due to their calm waters and plentiful food. You might spot a huge variety of animals there, from huge mammals to reptiles to parrots. Some guests even get to see the rare Black Caiman, which at four meters (12 feet) long, is the largest predator in the entire Amazon. Oxbow Lakes are fascinating, unique habitats that occur all over the Amazon Basin. They’re essential to many rainforest animals and serve as important sources of food for human communities. By visiting an Oxbow Lake, you’ll understand another facet of Amazon life.

4. Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

A dazzling spectacle because our Tambopata, Peru, region of the Amazon is so well-preserved and remote, it’s one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet. In fact, around 20 different tropical bird species visit the Clay Lick! Whether you’re a fan of vocal macaws or playful parrots, you’ll be truly delighted by the spectacle. We get you to a slightly hidden spot just across from the Clay Lick itself. As a result, you get incredibly close to these brilliant birds, without disturbing their pristine habitat. While you can see a caged parrot or macaw back home, nothing compares to watching them free, wild, and magnificent in their true home.

5. River Overlook Trail

A panoramic Amazon vista. Because you stand at a high point above jungle lowlands, the overlook features incredible views in every direction. You can see the treetops, river, and winding banks reaching all the way the horizon. There, the Puno cloud forest lies — a series of rolling, misty hills far in the distance. That final, beautiful view isn’t all this hike is about. In contrast, the entire trail is full of opportunities to see amazing flora and fauna and learn about the forest. We’ll show you how the landscapes transform as we walk through a Terra Firme forest and into a secondary-growth forest.

6. Medicinal Plants Trail

Marvel at the miracles of the Amazon. There are thousands of plant species in the Amazon, many with incredible uses. These plants developed compounds to defend against the animals who ate their leaves and tunneled into their trunks. As a result, native peoples have studied and used these natural chemicals for thousands of years. Explore Traditional Shaman Culture. Long before European and American scientists realized Amazon plants’ medical potential, the cultures of the rainforest had amassed a vast knowledge base. In learning about the traditional uses of Amazon plants, we can begin to understand and respect native cultures.

7. Children’s Rainforest Trail

An adventure your kids will never forget. The trail provides an exciting adventure that kids of all ages delight in. We follow maps, solve riddles, and find clues to discover the “treasure of Ania.” The path visits the houses of Ania and Tawa, the grandfather healer of the woods. While searching for the Lost Brazil Nut,” the City of Ants, and other fun games, kids learn how Amazonian peoples live. Refugio Amazonas Lodge has worked closely with ANIA, a Peruvian organization dedicated to teaching kids how to protect the environment. By participating in the adventure, you’re providing your own children with this important knowledge. Even more, you’re supporting ANIA’s goal to create the “Land of Children”: 100,000 acres of protected land designed to engage kids.

8. Jungle Farm Visit

Discover amazing tropical plants. At the jungle farm, you’ll get to find out how your favorite tropical foods are grown and you’ll discover entirely new foods! Farmers will explain how and why they organically grow a great variety of crops. Finally, you get to see, smell, touch and taste fruits you’ve never even heard of, like Copuazu, “Fish-eye” Chilis, and Cocona. Farmers teach you about agricultural life in the Amazon, connecting their practices to age-old traditions in the region. Local communities are made up of the Ese Eja, an indigenous people native to Tambopata, along with folks who migrated here from the Peruvian highlands several decades ago. Farming is an integral part of life here, and you’ll end the visit with a greater understanding of local culture and traditions.

9. Sunset Cruise (for an additional of USD 75)

Marvel at true Amazonian splendor. The Tambopata River is a dazzling vantage point to view the surrounding rainforest bathed in sunset colors. Flanking the river on both sides, you’ll see endless stretches of rich lowland forest illuminated by the multi-hued light. At bends in the river, you can gaze all the way to the blue, rolling hills of the Puno Cloud Forest far in the distance. The day is jam-packed with jungle adventures, from searching for monkeys to fishing for piranhas. There’s no better way to end an action-filled day than with the Sunset Cruise. In fact, it’s one of our most relaxing, romantic activities, giving you the chance to take in the landscape at a leisurely pace.

10. Amazon Aerobotany

Contribute to jungle science. While it may seem like just a fun activity as you fly a drone in the jungle, by participating in the project, you really do help Amazonian science advance! The data you collect improves our understanding of the biological rhythms and life cycles of rainforest trees, and helps monitor and protect these valuable ecosystems in the long term. The Canopy Tower is a must-visit for all our guests. With Aerobotany, you get a chance to enjoy the natural beauty and incredible wildlife of the treetops. But even more than that, you delve deeper into the canopy’s evolution and biology. This makes it a fantastic activity for kids and adults passionate about science.

11. Night Lectures

Explore Amazon sustainability. Our lodges all focus on sustainable tourism. We’re committed to using tourism to improve, not harm, local people and the natural world! Many of our Night Lectures touch on these themes, highlighting our strengths and struggles. We hope this can show how sustainability can enhance your own life as well! While Refugio Amazonas lodge is one of the oldest ecotourism companies in the Amazon, we’re always learning more from our guests! Night Lectures give you the opportunity to learn about our current efforts and offerings. But above all, they provide the background you need to give us valuable feedback. As a result, we can continue to improve.

12. Mammal Clay Lick

See One-of-a-Kind Species. The Mammal Clay Lick attracts many species that you won’t see anywhere else in the rainforest. Some animals, like the Jaguar or the Giant Anteater, are very elusive. Due to their shyness and scarcity, you’re most likely to catch sight of them while checking the camera traps. You’ll have an incredible experience visiting other animal Clay Licks, particularly Tambopata’s famous Macaw Clay Licks, and witnessing a true spectacle of nature. But the Mammal Clay Lick offers a unique chance to participate in the scientific process by helping with the Amazon Cam project! This makes it a must-do activity for science lovers of all ages.

13. Jungle Mountain Biking (for an additional of USD 75)

Stoke your adventurous spirit. While our expert guides will make sure you’re safe and prepared, Mountain Biking still provides a rollicking adventure through the jungle. Even advanced bikers will delight in exploring a wholly new, wild and diverse environment. In fact, the Amazon jungles of Tambopata are a far cry from forested mountain paths anywhere else in the world. You have the opportunity to explore an area that few people in general, let alone mountain bikers, have ever seen! We do not carry bicycles for kids.

14. Parakeet Clay Lick

Discover different species. No trip to Tambopata would be complete without visiting one of the large Macaw Clay Licks, of course. But sometimes these giant Macaws overshadow their smaller cousins. On the contrary, Parakeets and smaller Parrots are fascinating, beautiful creatures that merit a closer look. Our guides will ensure that you get up close and personal with the cliff’s Parakeets and Parrots. Because we have extensive training and top-notch telescopes, you’ll be able to spot every exquisite feather on the birds’ heads.

15. Discovering a New Species

Marvel at the Amazon’s diversity. Most of the world’s species still haven’t been discovered. In fact, the Amazon Rainforest is home to the most undiscovered species of all, especially insects! Because of its remarkable biodiversity, the Tambopata jungle is one of the best places in the world to find new species, especially insects. Unless you’re an intrepid scientist or you find a new planet, you might never get another chance to discover a species for yourself. As a result, you have a once-in-a-lifetime chance of discovering a new species, in fact, a new species is discovered every month here!
