Inca Quarry Trail 1 Day Hike in Ollantaytambo
Inca Quarry Trail 1 Day Hike–If you are after a bit challenging day trek then this is the best option. This trail offers dramatic vistas of the Urubamba mountain range with its Veronica mountain (5,682 m/ 18,637 ft) at the background, the Sacred Valley at the bottom.
But, the highlight of this day trek is the Gate of the Sun (3,650 m/ 11,972 ft) located on a hilltop, a unique place with a snowcapped mountain at the background and perfect to shoot amazing photos of the mountain through the gate, this area is very well known for its rock quarry with remains of many cut rocks, a place where the Incan stonecutters worked cutting, molding and shaping the rocks for the construction of the sun temple in Ollantaytambo, and some ancient burials with skeletons inside are still seen today. Many parts of Sacred Valley are only now becoming open to the public and Inca Quarry trail is one of them. Even the locals were unaware of this great trail until a couple of years ago, as such, the area is still very much unexplored by tourists.
This hike requires a bit of experience in mountain trekking since the trail surface is dirt, rocky, with very steep sections. If you have planned to hike to Machu Picchu by Classic Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, or other alternative trails, then this day hike is perfect for the acclimatization before your long trek starts, which will make you ready to rock on your next hike to Machu Picchu.
The Inca Quarry Trail 1 day hike is officially operated by Peru Summit Adventures, a 100% local tour operator with headquarters in Cusco.

Trip Itinerary
DAY 1: A day to trek to the Inca Quarry and Sungate
Reaching the Gate of the Sun in the highlands of the Sacred Valley
At 7:00 am, your Peru Summit Adventures private guide comes at your hotel to pick you up, next, you will drive to the trailhead, which is located just close by to Ollantaytambo town at an elevation of 2,750 m/ 9,022 ft.
Once there, the day adventure starts, you will get into the trail, which is going up the mountainside until reaching the gate of the sun, as the trail is getting higher and higher it becomes harder and harder and the views become more and more impressive. After 2-hour hiking you will reach the Inca quarry zone, where the remains of cut rocks or carved rocks are still visible in the middle of shrubs, and the ancient burials are located in this area as well, once there you will explore the area with your private guide.
After this site, you will still hike up the mountain for 1 more hour to reach the Sungate (3,650 m/ 11,972 ft). Sungate is nestled on a hilltop whose door overlooks to the Veronica mountain (Wakaywillka Mt). The area is not properly researched yet, although it believed that the site was built to worship the gods of the mountain especially the veronica mountain and the sun god. Today, it is still visible some remains of water canals, walls, and Inca Trails. The highlight of this hike is the view of Veronica mountain through the gate of the sun, a great opportunity to shoot a perfect Peru postcard.
About midday we will take our packed lunch at a scenic spot with awesome vistas around. After exploring the area properly, we will return by the same trail to the trailhead, from where will take our private transportation to your hotel or other location.

Note on Itinerary
Although we do our very best possible to adhere to the schedule above, this itinerary is subject to change for several reasons beyond our control, including strikes, weather, natural disasters, and terrain conditions. 6. The Best Fare For The Best Trip
7. You Book, You Go…Don’t Worry… We Won’t Cancel
8. We are Local Entrepreneurs, A Family Enterprise (we are not a gringo company)
Probably you will see that most of the tour operators mention it on their websites that are local tour companies, however, if you research a little deeper you will find out that’s not true, they might be although half of the operation is done from here and another half abroad, they even have NorthAmerican phone number or European phone numbers, which is a clue to find out, we are not against the foreigner companies or half foreign companies, what we are against is that they lie.
In Cusco exist just few truly local tour operators. If you did not know, foreign companies come to Peru to get rich without paying a General Sales Tax or Tax Contribution to our country. If you did not know that, according to the United Nations, for every US $100 spent on a tour in a developing country or foreign travel companies, only $5 stays in the local economy. Normally, almost all of the money flows back to large companies operating outside the destination countries. As we are a local family enterprise, we guarantee that your travel expenditures will support the local economy, and improve the lives of Peruvians through contributing to general sales tax.
9. Responsible Travel
Be a responsible traveller! Let’s make this world a better place for everyone and for everyone that lives in it! The natural environments that we travel to are fragile and abundant with beautiful culture and traditions that are often reliant on tourism. We have a responsibility as travelers to minimize the impact of our presence, protect what is delicate, and leave a positive influence everywhere we can.
As a locally owned and based Peruvian tour company, we integrate these practices into our in-country operations we are aiming for a style of travel that makes the world a better place for everyone, and for everyone that lives in it. Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Peru Summit Adventures is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference by helping and investing in local communities, education initiatives, environmental conservation projects. These values are not more than just words, they are ingrained in the culture and philosophy of our crew, daily operations of Peru Summit Adventures trips, and at our office too.
