Weather on Treks in Cusco: Weather Expected in Treks in Cusco to Machu Picchu “the best time to go”

Weather on Treks in Cusco Machu Picchu–Generally, the treks in Cusco are located in the Andes mountain range, the trail goes through several types of Andean environments including cloud forest, semi-tropical valleys, highlands, and alpine tundra, all these environment types make the trek’s weather very diverse. On the following lines, you will see that how would weather look like on every trek, this information is referential/average information which may vary depending on the specific month you hike.

Ausangate Trek

During the day. April to October, the weather is sunny ranging from 10oC/ 50F to 20oC/ 68F, average 16oC/ 61F, at the high passes or high points it’s windy with some drizzle. November to March is the rainy season, rain is expected every day. Weather is totally unpredictable in the mountains of the Andes, we may get rain, snow, wind, we need to be prepared for this to avoid some weather hassle bringing proper equipment (see the checklist on the itinerary) like Goose down jackets, merino thermal shirt, pants, fleece, hardshell or gore-tex jackets, merino socks, gore-tex hiking boots, gloves, buff, bandana, sunglasses, hiking trousers.

During the morning (5:00 am – 8:00 am). In the early morning the temperature is very cold, still with some frost, usually the roof of the tents is very frosty, the grass is very frosty, with the temperature ranging from 3oC/ 37F to 10oC/ 50F, and average 5oC/ 41F.

During the afternoon (4:00 pm – 7:00 pm). It’s very cold, with glacier winds, with temperatures ranging from 4oC/ 39F to 15oC/ 59F, and average 8oC/ 46F. Warm jackets (goose down), warm trousers are perfect for this kind of temperature.

During the night. The temperature gets until -10oC/ 14F, sometimes it can rain, snow with strong winds as we are very close to the glacier mountain of Ausangate. You’ll be provided a hot water container, to put into your sleeping bag that way to keep warm temperature. Please your sleeping bags should be -15oC/ 5F goose down type, and please bring sleeping bag LINER for each person, and merino thermal shirt, pants, socks are very indispensable for this kind of night temperature.

Note on the weather: The weather is very changeable in Ausangate area, it could be sunny during the days, with cold nights and clear sky, and sometimes it could be foggy, rainy, and even snowy or mixed. Best Time to Hike the Ausangate Trek:

  • The best time to hike this trail is from May through October when days are mostly with blue skies and starry nights.
  • November, March, and April are still ok to hike although it is already the rainy season so the rain is expected.
  • December, January, and February are months when a strong rainstorm and snowstorm happen, some sections along the trail are covered by snow. These months are not recommended to hike this trail.

Salkantay Trek

During the day. April to October, the weather is sunny ranging from 12oC/ 53F to 28oC/ 82F, average 17oC/ 62F (day temperature in some sections varies according) at the high passes or high points it’s windy with some drizzle sometimes. However, weather is totally unpredictable in the mountains, especially the days 1 and 2, where is expected to get, rain, strong wind, the days 3 and 4 the trek is carried out ina sub-tropical area where the temperature is hotter. November to March is the rainy season, rain is expected every other day. We need to be prepared for this, to avoid some weather hassle bringing proper equipment (see the checklist on the itinerary), like Goose down jackets, merino thermal shirt, and pants, fleece, hardshell or gore-tex jackets, merino socks, gore-tex hiking boots, gloves, buff, bandana, sunglasses, hiking trousers.

Choquequirao Trek

During the day. April to October, the weather is sunny ranging from 16oC/ 60F to 33oC/ 91F, average 18oC/ 64F. Choquequirao trek does not have any high pass or point along the trail, the trek takes place between 2,900m/9,514 ft and 3,100m/ 10,171 ft, in the basin part of the Vilcabamba range. In the rainy season from November to March the weather is totally unpredictable, it can even rain every single day.

During the night. The temperature gets until 4oC/ 39F on the second campsite, the other nights the campsites are located in semitropical places where the average temperature is 10oC/ 50F. The sleeping bag should be 1oC/ 33F, -5oC/ 23F.

Best Time to Hike the Choquequirao Trek:

  • The best time to hike this trail is from April through October when days are mostly with blue skies and starry nights.
  • November, December, March are still ok to hike although it is already the rainy season so the rain is expected.
  • January and February are months when a strong rain-storm happens, some sections along the trail are damaged by rockfalls and landslides. These months are not recommended to hike this trail.

Lares Trek, Inca Quarry Trail Trek, Ancascocha Trek

During the day. April to October, the weather is sunny ranging from 10oC to 20oC/ 50F to 68F average 16oC/ 60F, at the high passes or high points it’s windy with some drizzle. However, the weather is totally unpredictable in the highlands, we may get, rain, snow, wind. November to March, the weather is mostly rainy with temperatures ranging from 08oC to 20oC/ 46F to 68F average 12oC/ 53F, at the high passes or high points it’s usually windy with rain, these months are within the rainy season in the Andes of Peru, some days could be rainy in the mornings for a couple of hours, other days in the afternoon, or could be some sunny days as well. We need to be prepared for this, to avoid some weather hassle bringing proper equipment (see the checklist on the itinerary), like Goose down jackets, merino thermal shirt, pants, fleece, hardshell or gore-tex jackets, merino socks, gore-tex hiking boots, gloves, buff, bandana, sunglasses, hiking trousers.
